| Foot and Ankle Conditions | ||
The foot is a complex part of the body. In a very small region there are numerous bones, joints and soft tissue structures such as ligaments and tendons. There is a lot to go wrong. Fortunately over the last few years our knowledge regarding these problems has advanced considerably and newer therapies have been developed. As a consequence a small group of orthopaedic surgeons have specialised particularly in this region of the body. Mr Hepple is fully trained in all aspects of foot and ankle surgery. He has extensive experience in arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery to the ankle including the revolutionary technique of arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis. He is involved in current research into "autologous chondrocyte implantation" a new technique designed to culture and grow cartilage as a treatment for small areas of joint damage. Ankle arthritis is common and recently ankle replacement has become a viable option for many patients. Mr Hepple was amongst the first surgeons worldwide to use the Mobility ankle replacement and routinely performs this operation in appropriate cases. Ankle instability occurs frequently after a serious ligament injury to the ankle during sport. Patients often complain of repeated giving way or just persistent pain after such an injury. A full return to sport can be expected after appropriate treatment. Mr Hepple has an interest in the modern management of forefoot deformity such as hallux valgus (bunions) and hallux rigidus (arthritis of big toe). He performs a number of newer operations including SCARF osteotomy when required. Follow the links on the left to read more and download an information sheet (.pdf file). |
